International Direct Dialling (IDD) came into operation in July 1990 and with IDD development came the Island's first coin and card phones. The first card phone was installed at the local Post Office Building in Jamestown and the Albert Dock Liverpool cards were used in the first instance due to the non-availability of St. Helena phone cards at that time. The first issue of St. Helena phone cards were received later in 1990.
Over the years St. Helena phone cards depicting Local Scenery 1990, Wildlife 1992, Ships Serving St. Helena 1995, Napoleonic Era 1996, Endemic Plants 1997 and two issues in 2000, Cable & Wireless Centenary Collection and Island Views were issued. Due to the remoteness and low denominations, the Island's phone cards are and continue to be an attraction around the world. Stocks of some issues are now exhausted and can only be obtained from other collectors.
More information about St. Helena and Cable & Wireless St. Helena can be found here.
