Rope access training
Cable & Wireless employees have recently been involved in a comprehensive course in Rope Access Training at Level 1. During mid June to early July 2004, nine employees, which included the riggers, linesmen/fitters and their foreman and supervisors undertook the training under the leadership of Acting Deputy Fire Chief, Alan Thomas and his team, and have been learning the techniques of rope access and working at height in order to support safe systems of work.
The training was specifically designed for use during the maintenance of cable routes on steep slopes.

The training covered modules in safe systems of work with 100% redundancy, rope access, equipment care and identification of faults, edge management, risk assessment, knots and hitches, belays, pulley systems, hauling systems, lowering, fall factors, cableways, work positioning, movement over loose/steep ground and rope types and dynamics. On completion of the training, employees were awarded certification reflecting their competence in the various modules.

An evaluation of the training reflected that employees found the course very useful and it has further developed their confidence and competence in the operation of their duties. In summarising the benefits of the training, Service Provisioning Supervisor, Kevin George commented,
“All employees found the course interesting as we entered an entirely different field. What we learnt has been very useful in improving our access to cable routes and the course has highlighted the importance of teamwork. The course tutor and his assistants should be congratulated on their professional approach and for providing enjoyable sessions.”

With regard to the performance of the participants, Course Tutor, Acting Deputy Fire Chief Alan Thomas said, “The Rope Access training went extremely well and I was pleased with the attitude and the teamwork of the participants. They were quick to learn and will now be able to apply certain extra skills to achieve safe systems of work.”
