Today, Cable & Wireless provides over two thousand telephone lines to customers throughout St Helena.
The telephone network is based around a single digital telephone exchange located at Whitegate. Distribution of telephone lines around the island is by an extensive copper network. Digital transmission systems are used to extend lines to the more distant locations. The exchange is fully automatic and international direct dialling is possible to almost all countries in the world. The Whitegate exchange is connected to The Briars using a digital transmission system.
The Briars is the main technical facility and it is here that the satellite earth station is located connecting St Helena with the rest of the world. We use a 7.6 metre satellite dish and have direct links to the United Kingdom and Ascension Island.
The "Helanta" ISP is also located at The Briars and from here businesses can have dedicated internet connections using xDSL technology or 56k dialup. "Helanta" ISP connects customers to Cable & Wireless’ premier IP Backbone via a 1.5Mbps/512Kbps Asymmetric Satellite link.
Telephone operators are also located at The Briars and from here they offer a range of operator services including international directory enquiries.
Cable & Wireless operates a television rebroadcast network transmitting a variety of satellite TV channels. The television rebroadcast network comprises a satellite dish to receive the channels and five transmitter sites to provide wide coverage around the island.
