Media

Technology and customer demand have seen the media industry change dramatically. Print media owners are moving online to maintain market share and advertising revenue. Radio stations are streaming content onto the web and TV companies are embracing digital services to distribute their programmes and interact more closely with audiences.

Cable&Wireless Worldwide provides the infrastructure, next generation technology and services behind these transformations in the media industry.

MANAGING THE BBC'S NETWORKS

When the BBC switched to outsourcing its technology requirements, Cable&Wireless Worldwide won the contract to provide a fully managed service for all aspects of the corporation's broadcast, data and voice communications. We now operate the Managed Broadcast Network that transfers programme content internally and distributes the BBC's analogue TV and radio channels around the UK. The network also carries the BBC's Digital Satellite and Digital Terrestrial channels, and provides a high-speed data network for many of their main business applications.

We've also taken over the contracts and management of more than 30 suppliers of network services such as Mobile Telephony, Satellite Services and International Circuits, ensuring they meet their SLAs and provide value for money. We've achieved significant savings for the BBC, while allowing them to focus on their broadcasting.

NEXT GENERATION BENEFITS FOR JOHNSTON PRESS

As one of the UK's leading local publishing houses, Johnston Press has seen its readers shift from print to the internet. To protect its market share and safeguard its vital advertising revenue, Johnston Press has invested heavily in digital media, including new revenue-generating online services.

Their transformation into a successful online publisher was made possible by the next generation network we created for them, offering MPLS connectivity from 2Mb to 1GB, plus private access broadband and ADSL connections to over 200 locations. Cost-effective and easily scalable, it gives Johnston Press the flexibility to adjust to changing market conditions and their own evolving business objectives.

Now all their business systems and applications are consolidated into two secure and resilient Cable&Wireless Worldwide data centre locations, simplifying maintenance, reducing costs and introducing new benefits; such as a 'publish once' function that allows content to be quickly accessed, moved and reused.

EXPERIENCE THAT'S READY FOR THE FUTURE

Our extensive experience of the media sector means we're ready for your challenge. We created and currently provide the Sky Interactive platform, including connectivity to all the red button applications. Our high performance, resilient data services allow Bauer Media to stream live audio from their Kiss and Magic brands, using cost-efficient centralised hubs. We've also rationalised the Press Association's disparate networks into a central, high availability platform, for fast distribution of content for events including the UK General Election and 2012 London Olympics.

As audiences become increasingly selective and sophisticated in their media preferences, the industry has to develop fast. Cable&Wireless Worldwide technology makes it possible.
