Cable&Wireless Worldwide is already helping the UK Government achieve the four key goals it wants to realise via IT and communications technology. These are:
- Providing better value and performance from all parties, reducing costs by 20 - 30% and standardising systems and processes. We're already helping to make this happen, for example with collaboration tools for email and video conferencing that improve productivity. Our virtualisation services cut the cost of ownership for Government departments. We also help staff at all levels communicate more easily through efficient contact centres including our multimedia, interactive Storm platform, which encourages mobility and productivity.
- Achieving consistently high security for information, confirmed by regular audits. Cable&Wireless Worldwide is accredited to UK Government Restricted and Confidential levels. We are trusted to securely handle considerable quantities of sensitive information for a variety of Government agencies, including communications between the UK and hostile areas.
- Providing greener IT solutions, with targets for everything from data centres to contact centres. We help organisations reduce power consumption, and consequently carbon emissions, through virtualisation, data centre hosting and WAN connectivity. Our data centres are highly energy efficient, and with ultra high-speed connectivity through our WAN, virtualisation is a practical, dependable proposition.
- Embracing technology to deliver cost efficiencies and value for citizens - for example, by enabling more citizen interaction online, with more remote services. Cable&Wireless Worldwide operates some of the fastest, most resilient networks, including IP VPN, Ethernet and leased-line options, giving us the capacity to handle large quantities of communications between Government departments and citizens.

A PROVEN PARTNER
Our work for Central Government extends across many departments and involves a broad mix of products and services, delivered with renowned Cable&Wireless Worldwide dedication and ingenuity.
For one government department we provide a broad range of services including WAN, Voice and Managed Video Services - a collaboration system that unites over 10,000 end users. This reduces expenditure and, since we manage all aspects from the operating system to overall security, we can focus their staff resources on the quality of their department's service, rather than maintaining their IT.
Our latest initiative for this depatment, is to improve their green performance by introducing virtualisation. With over 400 servers and associated applications, the carbon savings will be considerable. On one system alone, we have already reduced the servers from 19 to three, saving 35 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year - a reduction of 80.6%.
IMPROVING COLLABORATION AND CUTTING COSTS
Our work for the NHS clearly demonstrates how Cable&Wireless Worldwide can help staff work together better, while cutting complexity and cost. We have dramatically simplified the old NHS email system, replacing numerous local email services with a mass migration to a Microsoft Exchange 2007 platform.
We migrated 350,000 accounts across to the new platform in just 11 weeks, with a peak transfer of 47,000 accounts in just 48 hours - the largest, fastest migration of its kind. The new system can accommodate a million users, facilitates mobile working and makes it easier and safer to share patients' sensitive data, both important aids to better collaboration and improved patient care. The only email system in the NHS accredited to Government Restricted level, it handles around 1.6 million messages every day and, as a measure of its acceptance and popularity, is growing at around 12,000 new users every month.
