Greener IT
As power becomes increasingly expensive to produce and buy, and the environmental impact of its consumption becomes even more pressing, Cable&Wireless Worldwide offers viable greener, lower cost alternatives.
THE GLOBAL IMPERATIVE
IT is a significant consumer of energy. In the US, servers and computing resources account for 1.5% of the nation's entire power demand. In the UK, the country's data centres already consume as much power as the city of Leicester.
There is now a global imperative to reduce IT's significant, rising carbon footprint, and at the same time mitigate the impact of ever-increasing electricity costs. Cable&Wireless Worldwide offers a greener IT solution, through virtualisation, data centre hosting, Wide Area Network (WAN) connectivity and new video conferencing and collaboration tools.
HOSTING IS MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT
Large data centres are more energy efficient per computer, than smaller centres, and Cable&Wireless Worldwide owns some of the largest UK-based data centres.
With large data centres, economy of scale comes into play. Smaller facilities might not be able to afford energy-saving technology, but as a large global concern, Cable&Wireless Worldwide can and does invest in high-efficiency cooling systems and power management that bring worthwhile reductions in carbon output.
There's often a psychological barrier to hosting data centres; many organisations believe their data centre should be on hand. Nowhere more so than in the City of London, where the number of data centres is in proportion to the population, yet the microclimate is 2°C higher than the rest of the UK. Yet with effective WAN connectivity, a hosted data centre will work just as well as one that's on site.
HIGH-SPEED WAN AND VIRTUALISATION
Cable&Wireless Worldwide provides a one stop shop for WAN and data centre resources, with ultra high-speed networks that allow you to serve your communications and applications remotely.
If your servers are further away from your users, you need more and faster bandwidth to carry your data and ensure application performance. With Cable&Wireless Worldwide, high-speed and highly reliable networks are widely available and with decreasing bandwidth costs and increasing speeds, virtualisation via WAN is definitely a viable proposition.
Server consolidation and virtualisation considerably reduces power consumption and carbon emissions. Servers typically run at 10% utilisation, but by virtualising and consolidating all your servers in our data centres this usage ratio can improve to as much as 70%. Yet increased power consumption of a fully loaded server compared to one running at 10% processor power, is proportionally much lower. This non-linear relationship between consumption and output makes virtualisation the green way forward.
TAKING VIRTUALISATION FURTHER
‘Thin PC' technology offers a further opportunity to save power and reduce carbon output. Like servers, PCs are often powered but unused, resulting in wasted energy. With Thin PCs, your desktop becomes an energy-efficient browser, with all the processing done at the data centre. Reliable, fast and high capacity bandwidth makes this attainable and entirely practical.
Cable&Wireless Worldwide can provide an end-to-end solution, from Thin PC solutions via our private high-speed networks to our UK based data centres where we provide our virtualised hosting - soon to be followed by a dedicated 'cloud compute' service.
REDUCING TRAVEL
Cable&Wireless Worldwide has helped a number of clients deploy high definition room-based and telepresence managed video system solutions to reduce travel cost and environmental impact. Having telepresence or High Definintion (HD) video solutions deployed as an effective managed service between key business sites has proved highly effective and enabled businesses to curtail significant international travel cost.
Cable&Wireless Worldwide recently integrated telepresence into a large utility company's boardrooms, on both sides of the Atlantic. This has enabled a significant reduction in time and cost of travel for the senior management team while maintaining, and even improving organisational communications. Cable&Wireless Worldwide has also deployed a 6 telepresence video across SE Asia for a global finance organisation to support a travel ban without the negative business impact.
