Telecoms magazine Capacity reports that Darren Webb has been appointed MD of Asia Pacific for Cable&Wireless Worldwide (CWW). He will oversee CWW’s expansion in the region and have overall responsibility for enterprise and carrier sales, service delivery, marketing, finance and people functions. Webb has been with CWW since 1996 and has held various sales and management positions.

Fierce Telecom reports that CWW is preparing its network to support the ever-growing demand for data services by laying a foundation for a new 100G optical network in Europe. The new 1,740-mile 100G network will complement the existing intercontinental 40G network it has in place for the various countries it already serves.

Capacity Magazine reports that Ciena has upgraded Cable&Wireless Worldwide’s (CWW) 2,800km London to Monaco route to 100Gbps. The route, which also has drop off points in Milan, Frankfurt, Dusseldorf and Amsterdam, is now claimed to be the longest 100Gbps link in Europe deployed to date. The upgrade builds upon a longstanding relationship between CWW and Ciena and was carried out with no network infrastructure changes. Ciena upgraded the system by adding the 100Gbps wavelength alongside existing in service 40Gbps channels.

Cable&Wireless Worldwide’s partner Ciena announced plans for a 100G network for Europe to prepare its infrastructure for future data needs. At over 2,800km long, the company claims it is the longest 100G line in Europe and it will build on the capabilities of the Europe India Gateway, built by 16 partners including CWW between London and India to bring greater connectivity between the two continents via an undersea cable system.

The UK tries to increase the number of wind farms to meet its 2020 carbon mandates. Computerworld UK reports that websites must provide a "rapid retailing" experience if they want to expand their consumer sales, according to research. Driven by the instant nature of digital technology and the proliferation of mobile devices, YouGov said consumers expect instant access to product information and to move effortlessly between mobile and online retail channels. The survey, commissioned by Cable&Wireless Worldwide, shows that price continues to be important for shoppers, with more than half saying cheap prices are their number one priority when choosing a retailer.

The extra workload is most certainly not due to a lack of jobs. The technology industry is not just about developers and coding and a need for passionate, highly technical individuals. It reveals significant demand for immediate gratification in the shopping experience – people want products and product info instantly, and if they don’t get it, they’ll go to another retailer. Retailers need faster, more engaging ways to interact with customers and convert sales – relying on a raft of technologies from point of sale and display innovations to a more sophisticated back office infrastructure. Speed and convenience (‘rapid retailing’) are top consumer priorities.

Computing.co.uk reports that the Cabinet Office has announced the winning bids to supply the multi-million pound Public Service Network (PSN) connectivity framework. Cable&Wireless Worldwide has been selected as one of the 12 suppliers. The PSN aims to cut the cost of delivering services by interconnecting disparate government networks.

The HR magazine reports Cable&Wireless Worldwide will be certified as one of Britain's Top Employers. The CRF Institute (the company behind this annual research project) announced the 12th annual list of companies to be certified as Britain's Top Employers. This was based upon research into their HR practices and employee offerings.

V3.co.uk reported on Friday that the government has announced the list of 12 networking firms chosen to provide its Public Service Network (PSN) framework. Cable&Wireless Worldwide was amongst the companies selected for the project. The PSN is intended to reduce the cost of using communication services across government by creating a single network that connects Whitehall and other public sector organisations to drive cost reductions and simplifying the rollout of network services. The framework is set to be worth between £500m and £3bn.

According to reports by Mobile Magazine, Cable&Wireless Worldwide is believed to be among the consortia in the running for the contracts to deliver the communication network for the Government's smart meter programme. The £4.5bn project aims to fit 30 million homes and businesses with smart energy meters by 2019. Running between nine to 15 years the contract and its potential for revenue generation is significant.

Computerworld UK reports that the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority is outsourcing its 999 emergency control service. Service provider Capita will supply a new "high-tech" 999 control system and run it on behalf of the Brigade. The article also highlights that the 999 emergency number is a centralised service run nationally by Cable&Wireless Worldwide, which sees callers transferred to the relevant call room, whether it's for an ambulance, police or fire service.

Frankfurt-based ancotel’s data centre has been selected as one of the three Europe-Persia Express Gateway (EPEG) hubs for Western Europe. The Frankfurt to Oman connection is scheduled for completion in May 2012 and will give the Gulf region additional connectivity options.

We’ve received coverage in Internal Auditing & Business Risk Magazine. The article discusses new legislation on bribery, and extensively quotes Paul Moore, Head of Company Secretariat at Cable&Wireless Worldwide. It notes Paul began a review and gap analysis of the company's existing business ethics policy last year with the help of the business's internal audit team.

Yesterday, we announced that Cable&Wireless Worldwide has been awarded the Government Secure Intranet Convergence Framework. The Public Service Network framework agreement will deliver secure pan-government hosting, applications and intranet services in an initial two year agreement. Coverage so far has highlighted our key messages that this is a strategically important PSN compliant framework that gives us great opportunities to deliver additional services to more than 600 government customers. We’ve secured coverage in The Daily Telegraph on our apprenticeship scheme.  It covers the news that about 200,000 people, or one-third of applicants, are expected to face rejection from universities this autumn thanks to increased competition over places. Others have been put off applying by lower-than-expected grades or worries over accumulating debt. As a result, more young people are preparing to enter the world of work at an earlier age. It is noted that Cable&Wireless Worldwide is recruiting for 30-month technical and nontechnical apprenticeship schemes.

Silver Spring is part of our smart grid and smart metering partner ecosystem. Together we will be able to provide Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) with a compelling end-to-end smart grid networking solution that can be exploited for smart metering. An article in The National highlights our recent survey with Ovum which looked at the growing awareness of and engagement with cloud computing amongst companies. Employee Benefits.co.uk  has an article covering the launch of our charitable foundation.  It highlights that the Cable&Wireless Worldwide Foundation, which was launched in June, is aimed at enhancing the lives of those with special needs through communications, as well as working with experts to understand how people’s lives can be enhanced. It also points out that staff have the opportunity to build partnerships with relevant organisations and will vote on the charities backed.

Business Cloud9  has a piece on the momentum building around the Governments Public Sector Network (PSN), which the Cabinet Office says will reduce its IT bill by up to 500m a year. Furthermore, by 2014, 80% of the Public Sector (which equates to about 4 million users) will be using the PSN Marketplace. It highlights that the main providers of the Network itself are BT Wholesale, Global Crossing and Cable&Wireless Worldwide.

Following the launch of the retail banking survey we have received wide coverage across the sector’s publications. The research, conducted with YouGov, found that UK retail banks are failing to maximise the potential of the online banking channel, despite the increase in popularity of the online platform. Sixty per cent of respondents said that their bank’s online offering had become increasingly important to them in the past two years, ranking it higher in importance than banks’ trustworthiness, interest rates and bank charges. A new route linking the east to the west dubbed the Europe Persia express Gateway, or EPEG, has been announced to the media. The new fibre-optic cables will provide high-speed communication from Oman to Frankfurt via Iran and Russia. Rick Perry is quoted in coverage. He is also featured at the signing ceremony alongside Ministers from Iran and Russia. The signing of the agreement has been featured in Press TV and Telecom Paper.

The Sunday Times has featured an article on family values, where it quotes Debbie Meech, our people director, who defends the logic of encouraging staff to recommend basic level positions to friends and family. The comments were made after public criticism from the Deputy Prime Minister of 'sharp elbowed' middle class people. Cable&Wireless Worldwide points out that offspring often share the values they already recognise in their parents. Employee Benefits Magazine highlights that Cable&Wireless Worldwide was runner up in two categories at the Employee Benefits Awards 2011 including ‘most effective all-employee share scheme strategy’ for our Share Purchase Plan.

London 24 highlights how one of our apprentices is through to the final of the National Apprenticeship Awards. Carl Norman, from Orpington, impressed the judges the most in the advanced apprentice category. The 22-year-old is an apprentice field engineer.

Our participation as a founder member of the Open Visual Communications Consortium (OVCC) is also on Computer Business Review, Business Standard and IT Wire. The consortium will help drive telepresence and video conferencing adoption in businesses through openness and interoperability.

CFO World highlighted that the survey of 102 large, multinational companies across the world, found that 45 percent have adopted some sort of third-party-hosted cloud service this year, compared with last year (28 percent).  Information Age, Telecoms.com, Computing, PC Advisor, EWeek Europe, Computer World UK and Telecom Finance also covered the findings referencing us.
