Customers benefit from first “all inclusive”, per seat, managed service mobility
Cable & Wireless Europe, Asia & US is now offering customers Secure Mobility, a fully managed service enabling secure, fixed cost WiFi access anywhere around the world. The new service marks a number of industry firsts, namely:
- First to market with a fixed, per seat cost model for mobility;
- First to offer a combined managed secure network admission solution;
- First to combine these with SSL Quick Deployment VPN within a single managed service.
The new Secure Mobility managed service is designed to enable business customers to efficiently roll out “all inclusive” WiFi, 3G and voice mobile network access with internet roaming to the workforce, on a fixed cost, per seat basis.
Secure Mobility enables simple cost-benefit analysis for the business to add mobility quickly and transparently without introducing additional security threats. Customers also benefit from inherent disaster recovery capability through Cable & Wireless’ dual site resilience, improved business continuity planning ability, reduced office real estate requirement as well as the human elements of increased productivity through flexible working, improved staff retention and morale.
Tim Ryan, Global Roaming Product Manager for Security and Secure Mobility for Cable & Wireless said: “Customers now expect to conduct business through any device, at any time and from any location at home or abroad. Secure Mobility removes the remaining barriers for businesses to making this happen, namely the unknown costs associated with traditional access minutes, intermittent security and the complexity of managing a mobile workforce.
“To keep our promise of delivering excellent customer service, we have designed a complete managed solution to address these issues, which creates a service precedent customers find very compelling.”
Ryan continues: “Mobility is increasingly business critical for enterprise organisations. Secure Mobility is a market defining service bringing together all of the critical elements underpinning mobile internet and VPN access into a bitesize managed service for customers to easily roll out to the workforce and justify to the board. It’s another great example of Cable & Wireless’ commitment to delivering genuinely excellent customer service.”

Technical overview
On a technical level the service combines access, transit and security, the three core elements of enterprise mobility through a single managed solution:
Access:
- WiFi internet access through 75,000 hotspots across the globe - 50% of the entire access points available worldwide
- Worldwide roaming is included in a fixed monthly fee per user, regardless of frequency, local network provider or location of web access
- The service supports access through standard dial-up, WiFi, DSL or 3G
- Access to Cable & Wireless’ Secure Mobility service is delivered through a partnership with wireless connectivity aggregator iPass
Security:
- NAC interrogates physical connections from any device attempting to connect to the network before allowing connection
- NAC automatically checks and updates the security provisions of the device attempting to gain access with firewall and software updates
- Managed Authentication – ensures users can be identified as who they claim to be
- The NAC capability is provided through Cisco, giving Cable & Wireless service management greater visibility and control over the corporate network’s integrity
- In-Line managed IPS – removing the network threat before it ‘hits’ the network
Transit:
- Once authenticated and connected, the user connects to the network through SSL VPN.
- Data carried through remote and wireless connections is monitored through Network Admission Control (NAC).
