In December 1997 Cable & Wireless Ascension Island became the Internet Service Provider for Ascension Island when an internet service under the name "ATLANTIS" was started. This was a 64Kbit satellite link to the Cable & Wireless Internet Backbone (AS3561).
As customer numbers increased the need to upgrade the link was becoming apparent. The link was upgraded to 128Kbit in 2001. The installation of more modern internet equipment also took place at the same time.
Another upgrade to the link took place in July 2003 when it was upgraded to a 1.5Mbps/512Kbps Asymmetric link.
