Ascension Day Fair
Each year Cable and Wireless contributes towards “The Ascension Day Fair (ADF)” to raise funds to employ a vicar. This year we sponsored a raffle.

Cable & Wireless Ascension video conferencing trials
In early January 2004, Cable & Wireless Ascension carried out video conferencing trials to investigate the feasibility of providing commercial quality video conferencing services to the Island. Initial testing was carried out between the Cable & Wireless Ascension & St Helena business unit offices and then extended to the potential customer’s offices.
These trials were carried out as a result of a request from the Island Governments of Ascension and St Helena for video conferencing services to facilitate virtual meetings between the inter-island councils and so reducing, or eliminating, requirement for quarterly exchange visits to the Islands to carry out these meetings.
The overall trials were very successful and an initial order has been received for the provisioning of this service. The current ready for service date is 1 April 2004.
Trials carried out between Ascension and other destinations have also proved largely successful, and the next initiative is to investigate the feasibility of providing a bureau service to other small business and the general public.
Testing was carried out using professional Polycom video conferencing equipment.
Cable & Wireless Ascension IT maintenance services
Cable & Wireless Ascension launched its IT Maintenance services in July 2003. This service was initiated by a demand in the market, both from local government and other local business for full scale computer and peripheral equipment management and maintenance facilities.
Cable & Wireless Ascension was able to quickly respond to this demand for services, with very minor changes and additions, utilising existing resources already available to the BU through its own obvious requirements for such a service.
To date this small diversion of service products has proved very successful and our services are currently provided to all local government and a few of the smaller businesses.
Flipper tournament
Cable and Wireless sponsored the Flipper Tournament for the 2nd year during December 2003 and January 2004, in honour of deceased Employee Andrew Bennett (better known to most as Flipper).
Sunday January 11th saw the closely fought final between VC Rangers (US Base team) and Georgetown (with 6 Cable & Wireless employees making up the Georgetown team).
After extra time the VC Rangers were victorious with a score of 2 - 1 and Miss Penny Bennett (Andrew’s Sister) presented them with the Flipper Trophy.
The Organisers of the Tournament Gavin Yon (Chocolate) and Alan Stevens (Pickie) are commended on a job well done.
Dew pond race
This year Cable and Wireless will be sponsoring the next Dew pond race.
