In 1982 Ascension was once more forced onto the world stage when the Falklands war started.
Suddenly the Islanders found Clarence Bay full of ships on their way to the Falklands, and Wideawake Field became the busiest runway in the world.
When the war ended, the majority of RAF personnel departed, leaving only a presence to service aircraft on flights to the Falklands.
