 |
The Europe, Asia & US business has, following the integration of Energis and the start of the turnaround of the business, refocused our CSR strategy to reflect the new business culture. The CSR strategy is owned by the Executive team and managed on a day-to-day basis by a CSR manager. Core components of the UK CSR strategy are:
Environment
Cable & Wireless Europe, Asia & US is currently rolling out an updated environmental policy following the integration of Energis and rationalisation of the property portfolio. The emphasis is on the efficient use of energy, resources and minimisation of waste. A company action plan is in place and an Energy Stakeholders Group (ESG) has been created. The purpose of the ESG is to ensure the roll out of a business-wide energy action plan, assessing the carbon footprint and introducing measures to reduce energy usage and offset fossil fuel emissions.
Overall responsibility for the environmental policy lies with the CEO.

Health and Safety
We are fully committed to maintaining a health and safety policy that promotes a safe working environment for all colleagues and is in line with UK legislation. This policy is embedded throughout the business. Overall responsibility for the health and safety policy lies with the CEO. Managers across the business have a direct responsibility to implement the policy for the benefit of all colleagues. The Employee Consultation Forum (ECF) and the Operations, Health, Safety and Environment Forum provide a means for consultation and discussion of health, safety and environment matters across the business. The Head of Security Management maintains overall responsibility for the upkeep of standards and compliance with all relevant legislation.

Our People
Placing service excellence at the centre of our ambitions, we want to create a company and an environment where people aspire to work. As such, the way we engage, develop and communicate with colleagues is fundamental to creating a culture focused on delivery of service excellence.
Our core values are:
- Think customer
- Do what's right
- Keep our promises
- Succeed together
These values are embedded via the Employee Consultation Forum, regular colleague road shows run by the senior management team, listening sessions, all colleague events, question time sessions - as well as survey and feedback sessions.
All colleagues have personal development plans, supported by the iLeARN portal which provides a 'one stop shop' to meet learning and performance support needs. There are a wide rage of learning activities and resources that are available from iLeARN including custom made courses, mentoring and an extensive library of business and technical books.
Cable & Wireless also has a dedicated Employee Assistance Line (EAL) - this confidential 24-hour service offers help and advice on a number of issues ranging from work-related stress to legal and financial advice.
Our matched giving scheme and 'give as you earn' - in partnership with Sharing the Caring - was promoted across the business via a series of Roadshows. And in September 2006, as part of a team working challenge, the Senior Management Team and colleagues across the business organised and carried out - in just half a day - a fundraising scheme which resulted in £30,000 being raised for good causes.

Our Communities
We're keen to play an active role in the communities in which we live and work and we contribute to a number of charities and encourage our colleagues to participate both in company-based schemes and charitable giving schemes. As a global communications provider, we focus our efforts on promoting ICT development and on helping to bridge the digital divide.
In partnership with Bracknell Forest Council, we run an after school ICT Academy at our headquarters in Bracknell. Cable & Wireless colleagues give their time to work as mentors to school pupils between the ages of 11 and 14 to help improve their understanding and use of ICT technologies. And as a founding member of the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), we work with the UK government to promote the safe use of the online environment by children.
Previous initiatives have included a partnership with KidSmart, the children's charity and with WebPlay, an online educational charity.
Over a number of years, Cable & Wireless has partnered with the internationally renowned charity Télécoms sans Frontières (TSF), a humanitarian non-governmental organisation specialising in providing emergency telecommunications in areas affected by natural disasters or conflict.
 | TSF has provided support following many major disasters, including the Asian Tsunami, the Pakistan earthquake, and the conflict in Lebanon. TSF works to set up a disaster recovery communications hub for aid agencies such as the Red Cross and Oxfam to coordinate delivery of emergency supplies. The network also provides communications services to enable displaced citizens to contact relatives and friends with whom they would otherwise have no way of getting in touch. |
