WASTE AND RECYCLING
We work closely with our waste brokers to identify improved waste management options to recycle and recover waste we are unable to reuse within our business operations. Improvements in data collection have enabled us to report more accurately and will help ensure we are on track to meet our target of increasing the proportion of UK facilities waste that is recycled to 79% by April 2012.
We have robust control processes in place to assess the suitability of recovered electrical and electronic equipment for re-use within the company or for resale before we send it for recycling. Only after these options have been considered will we send equipment for environmentally-friendly disposal. As well as improving resource efficiency and waste reduction, we’ve also made significant cost savings. In 2010/2011 we reused or resold over 120 tonnes of redundant network equipment.
We check our waste contractors to ensure that they comply with all relevant waste legislation and with our waste management procedures.
WASTE ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT (WEEE) AND RESTRICTION ON HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES (RoHS) LEGISLATION
Cable&Wireless Worldwide are not producers of equipment as defined in the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations, although we are classified as a distributor or end-user in certain circumstances. Our purchasing and supply chain department carry out checks on suppliers of electrical and electronic equipment to ensure they’re registered with a Producer Compliance Scheme.
Redundant equipment is re-used or kept for spares or resale where feasible. If there is no further use for the equipment, we return it to the producer under their WEEE take-back schemes or dispose of it through our own authorised and compliant waste management processes. We regularly check our supply chain to ensure compliance with Restriction on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) legislation by requesting written declarations of compliance and certification from suppliers.
