Health and Safety

Health and safety

We take the health and safety of colleagues very seriously and are always looking to improve how we manage health, safety and environmental issues at work. Everyone who joins Cable&Wireless Worldwide completes a training module on health and safety. And since 2008 we’ve included operations outside the UK in our Health, Safety and Environment Management System.

We are also a member of several external contractor accreditation schemes, which demonstrate our continuing commitment to health and safety.

  • Achilles Verify – a Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) assessment run by Achilles, a supplier assessment organisation, on behalf of subscribing utilities, suppliers and contractors. It focuses mainly on business-critical contracts and gives suppliers and contractors an opportunity to demonstrate their capability through a single standardised process.
  • SAFE contractor – a third party accreditation scheme. An independent auditor assesses the health and safety competence of a wide range of contractors and service providers.
  • Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme – a national database of contractors who have demonstrated adequate health and safety, compliance and management standards. This means they’re approved to work on local authority and other members’ contracts.

In 2011, we received a gold award from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA). For more information about RoSPA go to http://www.rospa.com/

All of our engineers complete the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) Telecoms Passport Scheme, which demonstrates a high level of competency in health and safety.

We’ve also appointed over 100 health, safety and environment co-ordinators throughout the business to help implement the Health, Safety and Environment Management System. They also represent colleagues in local consultations on health, safety and environmental matters.

Driving in the UK

We invite anyone who drives on company business in the UK, to complete a Driver Risk Profile in association with RoSPA. This forms part of our commitment to the management of operational road risk.

Accidents at work

In 2010, out of 154 incidents involving C&W Worldwide colleagues, 141 were 'no lost time incidents' and 3 were RIDDOR reportable with no fatalities. There were no enforcement notices or prosecutions.

Since 2008/9 we have embarked on a slips, trips and falls campaign that has reduced this number of incidents by over 10%
